A Portrait of Canberra and of Canberrans

The photographs in this book are inspired. Through a lifetime’s commitment to her craft, Heide has portrayed both the monumental and official face of Canberra, but also that thing which so many fail to grasp, its humanity. Whatever the content, the style is artful; she has aimed for joy and beauty, and truly made her mark."

A Portrait of Canberra and of Canberrans

 1979-2012

This beautifully crafted book has been published to celebrate the Centenary of Canberra, and 34 years of Heide Smith’s photography of Canberra and Canberrans. It is, amazingly, Heide’s fifth book on Canberra, but it is the first one to include portraits and landscapes. “A Portrait of Canberra and of Canberrans “ is available from all good bookshops, and online.

"it's the portraits that stay with you. Even when her subjects are naked, they are clothed in dignity. Even when they pose (one old man insisted on wearing his cockatoo-feather head-dress), they are simply themselves."

Portrait of a People - the Tiwi of northern Australia

Portrait of a People is first and foremost a book of photographs taken by Heide of the Tiwi and of Tiwi life over a twenty year period, but it is more than just a picture book, in that it also relates the history, and describes the lifestyle culture and art of the Tiwi.

From her first visit to the islands, Heide developed a unique relationship with the Tiwi, largely through her close friendship with an older, highly respected Tiwi woman; she is now regarded as “Gerardine’s sister”. Heide maintained a diary of her experiences with the Tiwi, and some of the stories of her adventures have been included.
